Nigerian Languages Data & Sci-Tech Conference
Nigeria is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in the world, with over 520 living indigenous languages spoken across the country. Despite this rich diversity, the majority of these languages are endangered, and several have already become extinct. Many others face the risk of being sidelined, threatening their continued vitality and cultural significance.
One of the key challenges is the limited representation of Nigerian languages in digital spaces. Most technological systems are designed primarily in English or other dominant global languages, leaving speakers of indigenous languages at a disadvantage. This digital divide not only limits access to information but also contributes to the gradual marginalisation of these languages.
However, there is growing momentum toward change. Several individuals, researchers, and organisations are actively working to promote Nigerian languages and bridge this gap. These efforts include the development of technological tools such as speech-to-text systems, language documentation platforms, translation tools, and digital archives that support both everyday use and long-term preservation of indigenous languages. Despite these efforts, there remains a significant resource gap, particularly in the availability of high-quality linguistic data needed to scale these innovations effectively.
Building on these efforts, there is a need for stronger collaboration between linguists, technologists, policymakers, and local communities to ensure that these emerging tools are not only developed but also widely adopted and sustainably integrated into education, governance, and digital communication. Without such coordinated action, many indigenous languages risk remaining underrepresented in the very systems that are shaping the future of communication and knowledge.
The Nigerian Languages, Data and Science Technology Conference (NLDSTC) serves as a platform for researchers, linguists, technologists, and policymakers to address these challenges. Through discussions, workshops, and presentations, participants explore practical strategies for advancing linguistic diversity in the digital age, from language documentation to advocacy for language rights.
Every generation has a role to play. We must prioritise the preservation and promotion of Nigerian languages by leveraging technology and collaborative innovation to ensure they remain relevant in an increasingly digital world.
The NLDSTC, in collaboration with the Department of Linguistics and African and Asian Languages, University of Lagos, will host its first in-person conference, with the theme: “One Step Forward: Promoting Advances in Data, Science, and Technology in Nigerian Languages” on July 10, 2026, at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State, Nigeria.
