NLDSTC Takes Stage
In a groundbreaking stride towards inclusivity and innovation, the inaugural Nigerian Languages Data and Sci-Tech Conference (NLDSTC) 2023 marked a pivotal moment in Nigeria's digital landscape. Hosted virtually, this pioneering one-week event shattered linguistic barriers by presenting conference sessions in English and five indigenous languages: Hausa, Ibibio, Igbo, Nupe, and Yorùbá. With the theme "Bridging the Nigerian Languages Gaps in the Sci-Tech World: Fostering Inclusivity through Collaboration," the conference aimed to foster the integration of local languages into the fields of science and technology, by means of collective efforts, ultimately paving the way for a more inclusive and diverse digital community.
The significance of the conference extended beyond its linguistic innovation. Drawing over 50 participants and featuring 16 presenters from across the globe, the event served as a platform for knowledge exchange and collaboration on a global scale though with regional focus. By bringing together experts and enthusiasts alike, the conference facilitated insightful discussions, presentations, and workshops centered on the intersection of language, science, and technology.
Throughout the conference, speakers and panelists explored various topics, ranging from learning in the indigenous language, Nigerian languages datasets, language preservation and digital literacy to the role of indigenous knowledge systems in modern scientific endeavors. The diversity of perspectives offered valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities inherent in the development of Nigerian languages within the realm of science and technology.
One of the most notable aspects of the conference was its emphasis on community engagement and empowerment. By prioritizing indigenous languages, the event highlighted the importance of linguistic diversity in fostering a more equitable and inclusive society. Moreover, the conference served as a catalyst for collaboration between academia, industry, and government entities, laying the groundwork for future initiatives aimed at promoting the use of Nigerian languages in scientific and technological contexts.
